Head of the Charles

The Head Of The Charles® regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event, was first held on October 16, 1965. The race was established by the Cambridge Boat Club members D'Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre, and Jack Vincent, with the audience of Harvard University sculling instructor Ernest Arlett. Arlett proposed that a "head of the river" race similar in tradition to races held in his native England, be held on the Charles River. "Head" races, a class of regattas, are generally three miles long-boats race against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately fifteen seconds apart. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of "Head of the River" or, in this case, "Head Of The Charles." Over the past 34 years, the Head Of The Charles® regatta has grown tremendously. Today more that 5,400 athletes from around the world compete in 19 different race events. Each year, the Head Of The Charles® regatta is managed by the members of the Cambridge Boat Club with assistance from hundreds of volunteers, numerous local colleges and universities, and the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). In 1990, with a strong commitment to supporting New England traditions, BayBank became the event's first corporate sponsor and BankBoston continues its support of the regatta today as the "Official Bank." J. Crew, Inc. the New York based apparel company joined the Regatta in 1994 as "Official Outfitter." Also teaming up with the Regatta in 1994 was TAG Heuer, the upscale Swiss watchmaker, as "Official Timekeeper." In 1996, AT&T joined the Regatta as the "Official Communications" company. The board of directors of the Cambridge Boat Club appoints five rustees to oversee the management of the race as well as a ten-member regatta committee that meets year-round to oversee the operational and logistical details of the event, which attracts more than 300,000 spectators over two days. In 1991, the trustees appointed Frederick V. Schoch as executive director of the Regatta and he continues in 1999 to spearhead the event. Schoch, a former secondary school English instructor and rowing coach for many years at Princeton, the U.S. Naval Academy and Georgetown, founded the Challenge of the Hudson regatta in New York. He also has been an active member of the U.S. Rowing National Team Coaching Staff and serves on the National Rowing Foundation board of directors. The Cambridge Boat Club is located at Gerry's Landing in Cambridge, MA. It was established in 1909 for the purpose of encouraging boating and yachting, and as a place for social gatherings for its members. The club maintains an active membership of approximately 325.
